March Notes

Both Athlone Choirs are performing in the Winnipeg Music Festival! Forms have been sent home with choir students regarding their performance times and permission forms to take the bus.

The Intermediate Grade 3-5 Choir is performing on Wednesday, March 1st at 10:00 a.m. Please send students to school in their choir uniforms (white shirts, black bottoms, and black or dark coloured shoes). Parents and family are welcome to attend this event. The cost is $4.00 at the door for anyone wishing to attend.

The Primary Grade 1-3 Choir is performing on Thursday, March 2nd at 2:00 p.m. Please send students to school in their choir uniforms (white shirts, black bottoms, and black or dark coloured shoes). Parents and family are welcome to attend this event. The cost is $4.00 at the door for anyone wishing to attend.

Grade 4-5 Athlone students are attending the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on March 16th. Permission forms and information will be going home with students next week. The students will also have the opportunity to have a close encounter with a small group of WSO instrumentalists that will be coming to our school to perform for our students on March 13th. They will get to hear various instruments and have a question and answer session about what it’s like to be a professional musician in Canada. Start thinking about what questions you would like to ask those musicians!

Due to our involvement this year with the WSO and their children programming, they have offered our students at Athlone 50% off tickets to:

Melodius Prime vs The Boyz of Noise!

Come and dress up as your favourite superhero and team up with Melodious Prime to save the WSO, and conductor Julian Pellicano, from the diabolical

Halloween Forest Fun!

Halloween is a great time of year! I enjoy dressing up and singing Halloween songs and doing silly singing games and actions in music. This year, I decorated the music room to make it a little spooky but fun! The students learned different orchestral pieces of music through "scary" stories and games. They didn't even know they were learning! We also played the Orff instruments to silly poems about pumpkin eaters. The Grade 4 and 5 students even had a speed competition on the xylophones with proper mallet technique and posture! It was amazing!

I hope the students enjoyed learning music in the Halloween Forest as much as I did!

Welcome Back!

One of my personal goals this year is to post more pictures and videos of what the students at Athlone are up in the music room!

We have started off our year catching pokemon each class and creating an Athlone Pokedex. Each student will get a chance to catch a pokemon and decide on it's matching rhythm. Stay tuned for more updates on Grade 3-5 Pokemon Compositions and drumming circles!

Grade 1-3 Choir has begun and is at lunch every Day 1 of the school day cycle. Please send signed forms back to school as soon as possible.

Grade 3-5 Choir has begun and is at lunch every Day 4 of the school day cycle. Some students in Grade 3 have chosen to be a part of both the primary and intermediate school choirs. Please send signed forms back to school as soon as possible.

Thank you for your continued support in the music program at Athlone!

So La Mi

Notes from the Music Room

Grade 1-3's field trip to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra!

We were fortunate to have front row seats at our field trip to the WSO last week! What a fun adventure! Students travelled around the world experiencing music and dance from many different countries with Mark and Manny the Tuba!
Grade 4-5 students have the opportunity to go to the WSO on Feb. 11th. Please make sure permission slips are in by the end of this week!

The Grade 4-5 students are attending the St. James-Assiniboia Musical Theatre production of Lion King on Monday, Feb. 1st. Please make sure those permission forms are in by Friday, Jan. 29th.

Students in Grade 3-5 are working hard on learning and mastering the recorder. Students are working towards their Black Belt in the Recorder Karate program. Even 5 minutes a day of practicing at home can help students achieve these goals! Your support is appreciated from home!
